Fitted Wardrobes in Ghana: Measuring, Materials and Import vs Local Carpentry
Fitted wardrobes are one of the first things buyers notice when they walk into a finished bedroom, and one of the first things to fail when they are built badly. In Ghana the enemies are humidity, termites and rushed measuring. This guide explains how to measure a room for built-in wardrobes, which board and finish combinations hold up in the coastal and inland climates, and how imported wardrobe systems compare with a local carpenter's work on cost, lead time and finish.
Why fitted wardrobes fail in Ghana
Most wardrobe complaints we hear from homeowners in Accra, Kumasi and Tema come down to three causes:
- Moisture uptake. Standard particleboard and low-grade MDF swell when relative humidity sits above 70 per cent for weeks, which is normal along the coast between May and October. Doors go out of square and drawers stick.
- Termites and borers. Untreated softwood frames and cheap plywood are an easy meal. Once a carcass is infested the whole unit usually has to come out.
- Measuring on an unfinished room. A wardrobe ordered from a drawing before plaster, screed and skirting are in place will arrive 20–40 mm too tall or too wide. On site the installer then cuts into the plinth or packs the gap with filler, and the finish is never right.
Each of these is avoidable at the specification stage.
Measuring the room properly
Measure after the floor finish and ceiling are complete, or at minimum after plaster and screed, with a known floor-finish thickness to add. A fitted wardrobe is built to the room, not the other way round.
| What to measure | How | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Wall width at floor, mid-height and ceiling | Three readings, record the smallest | Ghanaian block walls are rarely plumb; the smallest reading sets the carcass width |
| Floor-to-ceiling height at both ends and centre | Three readings, record the smallest | Ceilings sag; a top filler panel hides the difference |
| Depth available from back wall | Allow 600 mm for hanging rails, 450 mm for shelving-only | A 550 mm unit will not take a hanger square-on |
| Position of sockets, switches, AC units, windows | Photograph and dimension from a fixed corner | Split-unit AC indoor units often sit exactly where the top shelf wants to be |
| Door swing and skirting profile | Note skirting height and thickness | Carcass sides are scribed or notched around skirting |
Send the measurements with photographs taken from the doorway and from each corner. If you are abroad, a trusted person on site can do this with a tape and a phone in fifteen minutes; see our guide on managing a renovation remotely.
Materials that cope with humidity
Board choice matters more than the door style. The table below ranks the usual options for a Ghanaian bedroom.
| Carcass / door material | Humidity resistance | Termite resistance | Typical use | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Moisture-resistant (MR) melamine-faced chipboard (green core) | Good | Low unless treated | Carcass, shelves | Edge-banding on every exposed edge is essential |
| MR or HMR MDF, melamine or PET faced | Good | Low | Doors, drawer fronts | Heavier than chipboard; accepts lacquer well |
| Marine or WBP plywood, laminate faced | Very good | Moderate | Carcass in ground-floor rooms, bathrooms-adjacent | Costs more; preferred by many local carpenters |
| Solid hardwood (odum, mahogany) | Variable; must be kiln-dried | Good for odum | Frames, feature doors | Movement if not kiln-dried; limited supply of dry stock |
| Aluminium-framed glass or mirror sliding doors | Excellent | Excellent | Door panels | Frames should be powder-coated; coastal sites specify marine-grade coating |
| PVC / WPC foam board | Excellent | Excellent | Wardrobes in wet-adjacent spaces | Lower screw-holding; choose thicker panels and metal hinge plates |
Hardware is the other half. Specify soft-close hinges and drawer runners with a corrosion-resistant finish (nickel-plated or stainless), adjustable feet rather than a timber plinth sitting directly on the screed, and a ventilated back panel or small gap behind the carcass on external walls so condensation does not sit against the board.
Import vs local carpentry
Both routes can produce a good wardrobe. The honest comparison is below.
| Factor | Imported flat-pack or pre-assembled system | Local carpenter (site-built) |
|---|---|---|
| Finish consistency | Factory edge-banding, CNC-cut, matched doors across the house | Depends on the workshop; varies room to room |
| Materials | MR board, PET or acrylic doors, branded hardware available | Often plywood with laminate; MR board available but not always used |
| Lead time | Confirmed on your quote (production, shipping to Tema and clearing) | 2–6 weeks depending on workshop load |
| Measurement risk | Must be measured correctly before production | Carpenter adjusts on site |
| Cost | Competitive on a whole-house order; expensive for a single wardrobe once freight is spread | Competitive for one or two units; price rises with better materials |
| Warranty and spares | Hinges and runners replaceable from stock | Depends on the individual |
A practical rule: a single wardrobe in an occupied house is usually a job for a good local carpenter using MR board. A villa or an apartment block with ten or more bedrooms is where an imported system pays back in consistency, hardware quality and the fact that every door across the project matches.
Planning the internal layout
A fitted wardrobe is only as useful as its interior. A 2,400 mm wide, 2,400 mm high unit for a master bedroom typically divides as:
- One double-hang section (two rails, 1,000 mm each) for shirts and trousers
- One long-hang section (1,600 mm) for dresses, kaftans and agbada
- Shelving column with adjustable shelves at 300–350 mm spacing
- Two to four drawers at the bottom of the shelving column
- Top shelf above all sections for luggage
For children's rooms and guest rooms, reduce hanging and increase shelving. Where the house has no separate store, consider a full-height end cabinet for ironing boards and suitcases.
Delivery, installation and aftercare
Wardrobe panels arrive flat-packed in cartons, labelled by room. On site they need a dry, swept room, a level reference line and two installers for a day per bedroom in most cases. Panels should not be stored on bare screed or against external walls for more than a few days in the rainy season. After installation, keep the room ventilated for the first weeks, and ask the installer to leave a small stock of spare hinges, runners and touch-up edge banding with the owner.
Where Decoropic fits
Decoropic (Foshan Home Style Import & Export Co., Ltd., established 2011 in Foshan) supplies custom wardrobes, kitchens, doors and sanitaryware to Ghana as consolidated orders, with on-site measurement and installation supervision through our Accra office. We work in three tiers — Functional, Mid-Range and Premium — so a developer can match wardrobe specification to the unit price point, and there is no minimum order, so wardrobes can ship in the same container as kitchens and doors. Our Tema clearing partners handle the port side.
FAQ
Can a wardrobe be measured before the floor tiles are laid? Yes, provided the tile and adhesive thickness is known and agreed in writing. Otherwise wait until the floor is finished.
Which board should I insist on for a ground-floor bedroom in Tema? Moisture-resistant chipboard or MR MDF carcass with full edge-banding, or marine plywood. Avoid standard (brown-core) chipboard.
Do imported wardrobes come with doors already hung? Carcasses are flat-packed; doors are usually shipped separately and hung on site. Pre-assembled units take more container space and are only worth it for small quantities.
Can the wardrobe interior be changed later? Shelves on adjustable pins can be moved. Rail positions and drawer stacks are fixed, so decide the layout at drawing stage.
