How to Import Kitchen Cabinets from China to Ghana

To import kitchen cabinets from China to Ghana you need to get four things right in sequence: accurate site measurement, a signed-off design with a full hardware schedule, a factory and loading plan that protects the cabinets for a month at sea, and a clearance and installation plan at the Ghana end. This guide walks through each stage, the documents involved, realistic lead times and the mistakes that cause reorders. It is written for homeowners, diaspora builders and small developers finishing property in Accra, Tema, Kumasi or Takoradi.

Why kitchens are worth importing when tiles are not

Standard tiles are now produced in Ghana. Custom kitchen joinery, by contrast, is still a thin market. Local carpenters can build a kitchen, but matched door fronts, soft-close hardware, integrated bins, tall larder units and stone worktops cut to template are harder to source consistently. Foshan and the wider Guangdong region have a dense cluster of cabinet factories supplying this exact specification, which is why kitchens, wardrobes and other joinery sit at the top of the import list for a Ghana finishing project.

Stage 1: Measurement on site, not from drawings

The single biggest cause of cabinet reorders is measuring from architectural drawings. Walls are rarely built to the millimetre, and plaster thickness, pipe boxing and window positions move after the drawing is issued.

Measure after plastering and before tiling, and record:

  • Wall lengths at floor, worktop height and 2,100 mm, since walls are rarely plumb
  • Ceiling height at each corner
  • Window sill height and width, including the frame
  • Position and height of the water inlet, waste outlet, gas point and cooker isolator
  • Position of sockets and the extractor duct exit
  • Door swing and clearance into the room

Decoropic measures kitchens in Ghana as the first stage of its service, and holds the measurement sheet as the control document for the factory drawing.

Stage 2: Design, tier and hardware schedule

A cabinet order is only as good as its specification. Before anything is priced, fix the following:

ElementFunctionalMid-RangePremium
CarcassMelamine-faced particleboard, moisture-resistant gradeMoisture-resistant MDF or plywood carcassPlywood carcass, edge-sealed
Door frontMelamine or PVC wrapHigh-gloss lacquer, PET or acrylicSolid-wood shaker, veneer, or matte lacquer
WorktopLaminate or local graniteEngineered quartzQuartz, sintered stone or natural stone
Hinges and runnersSoft-close standardBranded soft-close, full-extension drawersBranded, with servo or push-to-open options
Internal fittingsBasic shelvesCutlery trays, pull-out bins, corner unitsFull accessory set, lighting in cabinets
Sink and tapStainless single bowl, standard mixerUndermount double bowl, pull-out mixerWorkstation sink, filtered or boiling-water tap

Humidity matters. Ghana's coastal cities sit above 70 percent relative humidity for much of the year. Specify moisture-resistant board, sealed edges on every panel including the back, and a plinth that lifts the carcass off the floor.

Stage 3: Factory drawing, approval and production

The factory converts your measurement into shop drawings: elevations of each run, a plan showing appliance gaps, and a cutting list. Approve the drawing in writing and check three things: appliance apertures match the appliance manuals you intend to buy, the worktop overhang is shown, and the filler panels are drawn where the run meets a wall.

Production lead time for a custom kitchen from a Foshan factory is typically — confirmed with your quote from drawing approval, longer around Chinese New Year and the October national holiday. Stone worktops are usually cut in China to the factory drawing with a small tolerance, with the final joint and sink cut-out done either in China from a template or on site.

Stage 4: Quality control and packing for sea freight

A kitchen that arrives damaged is a project delayed by weeks. Before loading, the goods should be inspected against the drawing, every panel checked for edge damage, hardware counted against the schedule, and stone worktops crated vertically in timber frames. Doors and drawer fronts travel best in cartons with foam corners, carcasses flat-packed or assembled depending on the factory and distance to the port.

Decoropic consolidates kitchens with other categories, such as wardrobes, doors, sanitaryware and lighting, at its Foshan warehouse so that one container carries the whole finishing package. A full container is preferable to LCL for furniture because the goods are handled fewer times.

Stage 5: Shipping to Tema and clearance

Port-to-port transit from Shenzhen or Guangzhou to Tema is roughly 30 days, with full-container door-to-port times quoted by forwarders in the range of 32 to 42 days. LCL adds about a week for consolidation at each end. Allow for schedule changes and port congestion.

Documents the clearing agent will need:

DocumentIssued byNotes
Bill of ladingShipping lineOriginal or telex release
Commercial invoiceSupplierValues must be consistent with payment records
Packing listSupplierItem count, weights, cubic metres
Import Declaration Form (IDF)Ministry of Trade, via ICUMSObtain before arrival
Importer TIN or GhanaCard PINGRARequired to lodge the declaration
Any GSA conformity document if applicableGhana Standards Authority / EasyPASSCheck whether the HS codes fall under the programme

Clearance runs through ICUMS, Ghana's Integrated Customs Management System. The agent lodges the declaration, ICUMS classifies and values it, duties and levies are paid at a bank, and the consignment is assigned a risk channel: green for release, yellow for scanning, red for physical examination. Duty rates on cabinets and the exact levy stack should be confirmed with your clearing agent, since they depend on HS classification. See the Tema clearing guide for the levy names.

Stage 6: Delivery, installation and sign-off

Deliver to a locked, dry room. Unpack and check against the packing list before the installer starts. Install carcasses first, level and fix to the wall, then fit worktops, then doors and drawers, then the sink, tap and appliances. Plumbers and electricians should make their connections only after the worktop is fixed.

Decoropic provides installation supervision in Ghana: a technician who checks the set-out, trains the local carpenter on the hardware, and signs off the installation against the drawing.

FAQ

Can I import a kitchen on its own without a full container? Yes. A single kitchen ships LCL or as part of a shared consolidation. The cost per cubic metre is higher and handling risk increases, so most clients add wardrobes, doors or sanitaryware to the same shipment.

What happens if the kitchen does not fit? If measurement was done on site after plastering and the drawing was approved against it, fit problems are rare and are handled with filler panels. If the kitchen was made from architectural drawings, a remake of the affected run is usually the only fix, which is why site measurement is non-negotiable.

Should the worktop come from China or be cut in Ghana? Quartz and sintered stone are normally cut in China to the factory drawing. Natural granite can be sourced and cut locally. Where there is any doubt about wall straightness, the worktop can be templated on site after carcass installation.

What about appliances? Buy appliances to Ghana's 230 V, 50 Hz supply and confirm each model's cut-out dimensions before the factory drawing is approved. Appliances can be sourced with the kitchen or bought locally; either way, the drawing must match the appliance.
