Lighting for Houses in Ghana: A Layered Lighting Plan for Villas
Lighting for houses in Ghana is usually decided too late and too simply: one ceiling fitting per room, chosen from whatever the electrical shop has in stock. The result is flat rooms, glare on glossy tiles and fittings that fail within two years from heat and voltage swings. A layered lighting plan, specified alongside the kitchen, wardrobes and bathrooms, costs little more and changes how the house feels. This guide explains the three layers, the electrical facts that matter in Ghana, how to specify LED fittings for heat and supply quality, and which outdoor ratings survive the rainy season.
The three layers
| Layer | Purpose | Typical fittings | Where |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ambient | General light to move around safely | Recessed downlights, surface LED panels, pendants, cove lighting | Every room |
| Task | Light for a specific activity | Under-cabinet strips, mirror lights, desk and reading lamps, pendant over the dining table | Kitchen, bathrooms, study, bedside |
| Accent | Light that gives the room shape | Wall washers, picture lights, LED strip in joinery or ceiling recesses, uplights on garden walls | Living areas, hallways, feature walls, exterior |
A room with all three layers on separate switches or a dimmer can be bright for cleaning, moderate for everyday use and low for the evening. A room with one layer is always the same.
Planning room by room
Living and dining. Ambient downlights spaced to avoid a grid of hot spots, a pendant over the dining table at a height that does not block sightlines, and accent lighting on the TV wall or a feature wall. Keep downlights away from the TV to prevent reflections.
Kitchen. Ambient downlights plus under-cabinet LED strip for the worktop; a pendant or two over an island; inside-cabinet lighting at Premium tier. The under-cabinet strip is the single fitting that most improves a kitchen.
Bedrooms. Softer ambient light, bedside reading lights or wall lights on individual switches, and wardrobe lighting that switches on with the door. Avoid a single central fitting over the bed.
Bathrooms. A mirror light at face height with a neutral colour temperature for grooming, ambient downlights rated for damp locations, and a low-level night light in family bathrooms.
Hallways and stairs. Low-glare downlights or wall lights, with two-way switching at each end. Step lights on external stairs.
Exterior. Entrance and porch lighting, wall lights at a height that lights the ground rather than the eye, path and step lights, garden uplights, and a motion-activated security light that does not blind the camera.
Colour temperature and output
| Setting | Colour temperature | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Living, dining, bedrooms | 2700 to 3000 K (warm white) | Comfortable in the evening; flatters timber and warm finishes |
| Kitchen worktop, study | 3500 to 4000 K (neutral white) | Clearer for tasks |
| Bathroom mirror | 3500 to 4000 K | Accurate for grooming |
| Garage, utility, outdoor security | 4000 K | Functional |
Avoid 6000 K and above indoors; it reads as cold and blue on tiled surfaces. Specify a colour rendering index of 80 or higher throughout and 90 or higher where colour matters, such as the kitchen and dressing areas. Keep one colour temperature per room so mixed fittings do not clash.
Electrical facts for Ghana
Ghana's single-phase supply is 230 V at 50 Hz, with Type G (British three-pin) sockets the common standard. Imported fittings must be rated for this. Beyond the nominal figures, three practical issues drive fitting failures.
Voltage fluctuation. Supply voltage can swing well outside nominal, and generator changeover produces spikes. Specify LED drivers with a wide input range, typically 100 to 240 V or wider, and surge protection at the distribution board. Cheap drivers with narrow input tolerance fail first.
Heat. Ceiling voids in Ghana get hot, and LED driver life falls steeply with temperature. Choose drivers rated for high ambient temperature, fittings with proper heat sinks, and avoid packing downlights tight against insulation or in unventilated voids. Remote drivers in a ventilated position outlast integral drivers in a sealed ceiling.
Dimming compatibility. Not every LED driver dims, and not every dimmer suits every driver. Specify the dimming method (phase-cut, 0 to 10 V, DALI or a smart system) and buy drivers and dimmers as a matched set. Flicker and buzzing come from mismatches.
Outdoor ratings for the rainy season
IP ratings describe protection against solids and water. Ghana's rainy seasons and coastal humidity demand higher ratings than many temperate markets use.
| Location | Minimum IP rating | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Covered porch or veranda, sheltered | IP44 | Protected from direct rain |
| Exposed wall lights | IP65 | Driven rain; seal the cable entry |
| Ground-recessed path or drive lights | IP67 | Standing water; specify drive-over rating where vehicles pass |
| Garden spike uplights | IP65 to IP67 | Irrigation and flooding |
| Pool and water features | IP68 and low voltage as required by the electrical regulations | Specialist installation |
| Bathroom zones near the shower | Per zone requirements; IP65 in the shower area | Follow the wiring regulations the electrician works to |
Corrosion is the other outdoor enemy. Within a few kilometres of the sea, specify marine-grade aluminium with a quality powder coat, stainless steel fixings, or copper and brass that patinate rather than pit. Standard die-cast fittings with thin paint fail in a few seasons on the coast.
Controls: from switches to smart
Put ambient, task and accent layers on separate circuits in each main room so they can be switched independently. Dimmers in living, dining and bedrooms add the most value for the least cost. Smart lighting is workable in Ghana provided the hubs and drivers are specified for 230 V, 50 Hz and the home network is reliable; keep a physical switch for every circuit so the house works when the network does not.
Specification checklist before ordering
- Lighting layout drawn on the floor plan with each fitting numbered
- Fitting schedule: type, lumen output, colour temperature, CRI, beam angle, IP rating, driver type, dimming method
- Switch and dimmer schedule per room, with circuits grouped by layer
- Driver positions and ventilation shown for recessed fittings
- Outdoor fittings specified for IP rating and corrosion resistance
- Spares: an agreed percentage of lamps and drivers shipped with the order
- Confirmation from the clearing agent whether the lighting HS codes fall under Ghana Standards Authority conformity requirements, since electrical equipment is among the groups the GSA covers

FAQ
How many downlights does a room need? Plan by lumen output per square metre for the room's use, not by a fixed count. A living room lit to a comfortable ambient level with warm white fittings needs fewer, better-placed downlights than most electricians install; the layout drawing settles the number.
Will imported LED fittings work with a generator? Yes, if the drivers have a wide input range and the installation has surge protection. Generator changeover spikes are a leading cause of driver failure where protection is absent.
What happens when a driver fails in three years? Specify fittings with replaceable drivers rather than sealed integral units, and ship spare drivers with the order. A replaceable driver is a ten-minute job; a sealed fitting is a replacement.
Should outdoor lighting be low voltage? Garden and path lighting on a 12 or 24 V system is safer and makes future changes easier, at the cost of transformers that must be housed in a ventilated, protected enclosure. Wall lights on the house are normally 230 V. Follow the electrician's wiring regulations for pools and water features.
