How to Import Building Materials from China to Nigeria
If you are planning to import building materials from China to Nigeria for a villa, an apartment block or a hotel, the shipping leg is the easy part. The work is in the paperwork sequence (SONCAP, Form M, PAAR) and in buying the right mix of products in one consolidated shipment. This guide walks through the Lagos port options, the documents in the order you obtain them, a category checklist and a realistic timeline from first drawing to container at your site.
Which Lagos port should your container go to?
Lagos has three container gateways. Your forwarder and clearing agent usually decide, but you should know the difference because it affects trucking and clearing time.
| Port | Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Apapa | NGAPP | Oldest and busiest container port; most China services call here |
| Tin Can Island | NGTIN | Adjacent to Apapa; also served from China |
| Lekki Deep Sea Port | — | Opened for commercial operations in 2023; 2.5 million TEU annual capacity; east of Lagos |
Published forwarder figures for a full container from South China (Shenzhen or Guangzhou) to Apapa are roughly 27–39 days port to port. Carrier schedules vary with transshipment, so a global forwarder quotes a wider 25–60 day band. LCL (shared container) runs longer, typically 35–50 days, because of consolidation at origin and deconsolidation at destination.
Decoropic ships from the Foshan warehouse via Guangzhou (Nansha) or Shenzhen (Yantian/Shekou). We book with your forwarder if you have one, or recommend a forwarder with Nigeria experience. We do not clear in Nigeria; your clearing agent does.
The Nigeria import documents, in order
Nigeria's process is bank-led. The order below is the practical sequence most importers follow.
| Step | Document | Who handles it | What you need first |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | SONCAP Product Certificate (PC) | SON-accredited inspection agency (e.g. Cotecna, SGS, Intertek) | Product test reports; applies to regulated products |
| 2 | Form M | Your Nigerian bank (authorised dealer) | Pro forma invoice, marine insurance, SON Product Certificate |
| 3 | SONCAP Certificate (SC) | Same agency, per shipment | PC plus final invoice and packing list |
| 4 | Pre-Arrival Assessment Report (PAAR) | Your bank submits via Nigeria Single Window | Original shipping documents, SONCAP copies |
| 5 | Assessment Notice | Nigeria Customs Service | PAAR accepted |
| 6 | Duty payment confirmation | Your bank | Assessment Notice |
| 7 | Single Goods Declaration (SGD) | Clearing agent on arrival | Manifest and rotation number confirmed |
Supporting documents from our side: commercial invoice (must carry the Form M number), packing list, bill of lading, and certificate of origin.
Two practical notes. First, the Form M must be open before we ship, so the pro forma invoice has to be final: product list, HS codes, quantities and values locked. Second, the SONCAP route depends on the product list. Tiles, sanitaryware, electrical items and some hardware are typically regulated; which exact lines in your order need a PC is for your inspection agency to confirm.
Duty, VAT and levy rates are set by Nigeria Customs by HS code and change periodically. We do not quote them; your clearing agent confirms them against your HS codes.
Category checklist for a Nigerian project
Most clients consolidate several categories in one or two containers. Use this list to decide what to buy from China and what to source locally.
| Category | Typical China sourcing | Local sourcing in Nigeria | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Custom kitchens & wardrobes | Yes — made to your drawings | Rarely at the same finish level | Needs site measurements before production |
| Doors & windows | Yes — aluminium and uPVC systems, interior doors | Possible for basic items | Confirm opening sizes on site |
| Sanitaryware & hardware | Yes | Possible | SONCAP likely applies |
| Lighting | Yes | Possible | Check voltage/plug standard; SONCAP likely applies |
| Furniture (incl. hotel FF&E) | Yes | Possible for basic items | Volume dictates container count |
| Tiles & flooring | Yes | Local tile production exists | Weight drives freight cost; buy 8–10% extra for cutting |
| Cement, rebar, blocks, sand | No | Yes | Never ship from China |
Decoropic offers three tiers — Functional, Mid-Range and Premium — across all categories so one project can mix, for example, Premium kitchens with Functional sanitaryware in staff areas.
A realistic timeline
| Phase | Duration | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Brief & drawings | 1–2 weeks | You send plans; we return a product list and pro forma invoice |
| Form M & SONCAP PC | Confirmed on your quote | Runs in parallel with production start |
| Production & consolidation | 4–8 weeks | Custom kitchens and wardrobes are the long pole; stock items wait in the Foshan warehouse |
| Pre-shipment inspection & SC | 1 week | Agency inspection at Foshan if required |
| Sea freight | 4–6 weeks | Foshan → Guangzhou/Shenzhen → Lagos |
| PAAR, duty, clearing | 1–3 weeks | Clearing agent in Lagos |
| Trucking to site | Days | Lagos or upcountry |
Plan on 3–5 months from brief to materials on site. Starting the Form M early is the single biggest time saver.
Payment and order size
We accept T/T or L/C. There is no minimum order; a single villa kitchen plus wardrobes can ship LCL, and a 20-foot or 40-foot container becomes efficient once tiles or furniture are added. Mixed categories from different factories are consolidated at our Foshan warehouse and loaded as one shipment with one set of documents.
Where Decoropic fits
Decoropic is the trading name of Foshan Home Style Import & Export Co., Ltd., established in Foshan in 2011. The founder has 26 years in trade and more than 20 years in West Africa. We have an office in Accra, Ghana, but no office in Nigeria. For Nigerian projects the model is: we design, source, consolidate and ship from Foshan to your Lagos port; your forwarder (or one we recommend) and your clearing agent handle the Nigerian side; installation support is remote — shop drawings, numbered packing, video guides and a WhatsApp line to our team. Ghana is the regional reference: projects there show what the same product tiers look like installed, and the Accra office is reachable if you want to see materials in person.
FAQ
Can Decoropic open the Form M for me? No. Form M is opened by the importer's Nigerian bank. We supply the pro forma invoice and product details the bank needs.
Does every item need SONCAP? No. SONCAP applies to regulated product categories. Your inspection agency confirms which lines in your order are regulated; we supply the documents and factory access for inspection.
Can you ship LCL for a single villa? Yes. There is no minimum order. LCL is slower and costs more per cubic metre, so once an order includes tiles or furniture a 20-foot container is often the better choice.
Who installs the kitchens and wardrobes? Your local fitters, working from our shop drawings and video guides. Units are pre-assembled or flat-packed and numbered by room.
